Although the first electric car was built in 1891, it has taken more than 100 years to come full circle. Henry Ford's 1908 wildly successful gasoline-powered Model T killed the electric car. With the plethora of cheap and easy petroleum perhaps near an end, the world has awakened to the possibilities derived from today's hybrids. The internal combustion engine, a technology of the 19th century, may soon be replaced by electric cars as their sticker prices fall, battery life is prolonged, and travel ranges improve. The Kentucky-Argonne Battery Manufacturing Research and Development Center is here to see that happen.

The Kentucky-Argonne Battery Manufacturing Research and Development Center is located within the Kentucky Energy Research Complex in Lexington, Kentucky. The center will faciliate collaborations with industry and other universities and federal labs with specialized capabilities and battery research and develop programs to complement the center's efforts.
